The Bloomingdale Fire Protection District has come a long way since its founding in 1905. It has included several transformations from a fire protection district to a municipal department and finally, as it is today, back to a fire protection district. The first full-time firefighters were hired in 1972. They were the fire chief, assistant fire chief and a firefighter.
The district is served by 49 full-time employees- 45 sworn personnel, three civilian fire inspectors, and one administrative assistant. The District also utilizes three paid-on-call firefighters. The district covers approximately 14.4 square miles and serves over 40,000 residents. Communities protected include the Village of Bloomingdale, and portions of Addison, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Itasca, Medinah, Roselle and portions of unincorporated DuPage County. The district responded to 6,028 emergency calls in 2023. A breakdown of the calls shows 65% of calls for medical assistance and 35% of calls for structure fires, vehicle fires, outside fires, hazardous materials, and other rescue and service calls. |
